Chicory is a plant that, historically, was brewed as tea as a substitute for coffee for people who couldn't afford coffee. Chicory was "good enough," though still not was it was trying to be - coffee.
One of the things that "chicory" calls to my mind are socially acceptable ways in which low-income and disadvantaged populations "make do" with things that are "good enough," though still not what they could be. I believe there are structures within American society that condone, even reinforce, poverty and inequality.
This blog explores if and how current systems and social structures help or harm the impoverished.
